Cayucos is one of the hidden treasure places for surfers. Last year, the small California beach town was rated by Men's Journal magazine
as one of its 25
favorite "hideouts and secret spots". Both novice surfers and surf
addicts visit to relax and check out the best waves. Swells have been
known to rise up to 6 feet or higher.
Most of the surfing congregates around the 953-foot long Cayucos Pier. The place is sheltered from the
prevailing northerly winds, making the waters around Cayucos slightly warmer than
surrounding areas. This makes the Pier a
decent spot to ride some waves along the Central Coast.
Come
prepared and surf to your heart's delight. If you never surf before
and need surfing lessons, it's one of the fun things to do in Cayucos.

Did you know?
On
December 23, 1941 (16 days after Pearl Harbor), the town of Cayucos was
rocked by a Japanese torpedo. This happened at about four in the
morning. It appeared to be an attack by the Japanese submarine that missed the tanker, Doheny. Another tanker, Montebello, was hit by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine two hours later, and sunk off Cambria. The crew of Montebello abandoned ship using lifeboats and were rescued by locals. Today, Montebello remains on the Central Coast, a few miles off Leffingwell's Landing.
